terrorism in the usa The September 11 attacks were a series of four coordinated and planned terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group Al-Qaeda led by Osama Bin Laden on the United States in New York City, NY and Arlington County, VA on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Four airplanes containing innocent passengers were in the for the shock of their lives as they departed. They departed from the East Coast to California and were shortly thereafter hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists. They were then flown into buildings to attempt the loss of American lives or suicide attacks. Two of the planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, crashed into the North and South towers, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. Within two hours, both 110-story towers collapsed and with it debris and fires erupted causing complete damage and the collapse of all other buildings in the WTC complex, including the 47-story 7 World Trade Center tower, and a huge conflicted amount of damage to ten other surrounding structures. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon the HQ of the United States Department of Defense in Arlington County, leading to a partial collapse in its west side. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was targeted at Washington D.C. but it was crashed into a field near Shanksville, PA after its passengers tried to retake control from the hijackers. 2,996 people died in the attacks, including the 245 civilians, a law enforcement officer, and the 19 terrorists aboard the four planes. It was the deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the United States. The attacks also caused at least $10 billion in property and infrastructure damage. This event was important because it forced the United States to set up better security measures in airports and also set up a time period where Muslim or Islamic people were terrorized due to the acts that happened on 9/11. This also gave the US a motive to want to track down and serve justice to Osama Bin Laden and all of the Al-Qaeda members.
